This isn't a study of romantic relationship, but a study on team relationships, for example, sports. There was a study on young basketball players in the Journal of Social Psychology, and they said that the researcher asked a group of boys to shoot free throws. They found that when boys cooperated to get the most free throws as a team and competed against other teams, both their performance and enjoyment were higher than when they competed individually without the support of cooperative relationship. So, the implication is clear. The world can be harsh and competitive, so you might as well face it together arm in arm.
