I think it really depends and also depends on how long you're okay with waiting to get to the position that you want. So if it's for software engineer I don't think a degree is necessary, however if it's for a product manager, then I do think it is.

I work in tech and I live in San Francisco and I'm 20 years old and I don't have a degree, so no.
