These incidents were met with scrutiny from the beginning, but later they were investigated more in depth. There was evidence to suggest that the report of the second attack on a U.S. naval ship was actually just misinterpreted reports or perhaps an incorrect radar reading. Some say it was entirely made up to get approval from the public for the U.S. to get involved in the war.
