There's a video essay somewhere on YouTube that explains that as a child you watch Spongebob through Spongebob's eyes, but as an adult you watch it through Squidward's eyes. Ain't that the truth y'all? I never thought about it like that before. What y'all think?
Yeah, girl, but it really only applies to the first few seasons. There's no real need to is one pops of a thing is it still coming out no need to watch new episodes see my response to Jake Boston for a little more info.
It's not that you don't like it so much as the fact that when you're a kid you're going to watch the show with the childlike naivete that SpongeBob represents.
Whereas when you're an adult, you're more likely to relate to a toned down version of Squidward. You're dated about life, probably stuck in a dead-end job, you feel like nobody appreciates you, dah dah dah dah dah.
So when you're a kid, you directly relate to SpongeBob, but when you're an adult, it's just nostalgic. It reminds me of episodes in which Squidward is able to tap into that SpongeBobby part of himself. I think SpongeBob does that for us as adults.
Sorry, I wasn't able to get that last part out quick enough, but for real I have not been able to find that video essay on YouTube for the life of me. It was so good!
Let me just add that episodes like the snowball effect and idiot box are some of the best in my opinion because they are able to illustrate so well the rare instances when adults are able to truly access the child in them.
We keep posting at the same time! I think it's good that you associate your kids with Spongebob. Think about it like this, Spongebob represents innocence. Now I don't know about Patrick, that's a different story. Have you seen the theories on YouTube?
That was the video essay's point. Basically the guy was wondering what happened to SpongeBob. Like how, why did it get so bad? And he postulated that it's because we lost this dynamic. And now it's just a stupid slapstick humor show.
