Donaldo Cavalcante said he spent the first few days surviving his escape on spring water and hunkering down in the area with shrubbery so thick that unless you were stepping on him, you wouldn't be able to find him. He went three days before he was able to eat his first meal, a watermelon snatched from a local farm, which he said he cracked open with his head.
