Prior to 2022, the Virginia state code prohibited sexual intercourse between two unmarried people. The penalty for this was a class 4 misdemeanor, which was punishable with a fine of up to $250. However, the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that this law was unconstitutional in 2007. Now, on February 6, 2023, the Virginia House of Delegates voted overwhelmingly to repeal their fornication code, and this bill was passed by a vote of 84 to 13. Now, Virginia is not the only state that had fornication codes. Ohio and North Carolina also have laws on the books that prohibit fornication. However, these laws are rarely enforced. So, the question is, if these laws were still on the books in your state, how big would your fine be?
