How do you teach your kids about diversity? For me, I'm Dominican-American, so I'm first-generation Dominican. I was born here in New York. And our family members come in all colors. And I have friends from all over the place and all over the world. So my kids have that kind of broad spectrum or broad perspective. And I also like to get books from the library and read about different cultures and just tell them about different ways that people live, different religions, all kinds of stuff. What do you guys do?

I'm so glad you brought this up kids naturally view other humans simply as humans I think you should fuels that natural instinct of theirs and keep them away from categorizing people based on their skin color

I agree with you 100% and like I told Sandra up above, Playgrounds is an amazing place for interactions with kids from all over the place.

I feel like people in this day and age should just end with the colorism and all of that because it really doesn't matter. People are human. our people.

I say this because the last times I've gone to the playground with my kids, I've noticed like one or two older women give my kids looks, which I don't appreciate.

Yes, it's a problem that we view others as different than us when we all came from the same place Whether you believe in evolution or creation we're all basically family and the first emotion you should feel towards your brothers and sisters is love

I was in education for the past 10 years in one day and that helps me talk about diversity is mission in like the history behind different cultures like and also making sure you emphasize why we were different

This is a really good question and this is something I have been trying really hard to do My son has five half siblings Four of them are from one mom who is white and then her boyfriend is black She has two other kids who are half black and then my other

And then my other stepdaughter, her mom is Cuban and her boyfriend is black. So we have like a lot of diversity in our little family as well. But one thing that I have been really trying to do is get bilingual books to read to my son.

And I'm really not good at Spanish. I did take a lot of it in college, but I'm trying really hard to learn it with him, teach him the basics and stuff like that because I think that it's important that, you know, he can say, will I come last thought to his sister like I don't know I think that's important

And then I think just like reading a lot of books and putting on shows that do include a lot of diversity just so that it's something that they see every day and you know having like diversity in your family they're gonna see it but also just seeing it reflected in the shows and the books that you're reading as well.

And I do really want to teach him about, you know, other cultures and religions and races that are not in our family and that I find a little bit harder, but I think that's where like shows and books and YouTube and stuff like that comes in handy to help you with that.

But yeah definitely just using all the tools out there and making sure that they're seeing all these other faces they don't look like their face and knowing that you know we're all normal we're all the same we're all humans there's just a lot of ranges of us

Yes yes yes definitely with the books from the library and you know what I also learned in college I learned about like when you learn a different language start with with a children songs easily

Yes, that is so good. Learning, I love that. Learning with your kids is amazing. It's so fun. Like if you don't know something, just like go on Google or go on YouTube or go on whatever and just search it up. I love that. to guess yes.

Yes I agree I think also the TV shows for example Sesame Street has done a good job with displaying like autism awareness Nuro divergent's kids with disabilities as well just

No I don't have kids but I would explain that humanity is beautiful because we come in so many different shapes sizes and colors

I agree 100%. I've been focusing on world history with the kids and reading them fables and folktales from different countries all over the world like they love it. I have a book here actually that I read.

That I read to them and they have like stories from Greece from South Africa from Kenya from Togo from Korea Japan Thailand of natives all type of stuff is really cool

I'm with you 100% and that's what I tell my kids. Like I was saying above, sometimes I've noticed different looks and stuff towards my littles in the playground and I really don't appreciate because we're already in 2023.

Yeah you can teach your kids that but you know I'll just leave it up to the school because that's what I'm paying them for the teach my kid about you know diversity and stuff like that but it's also good to educate your children are yourself so yeah
