Pastor David Zanstra admitted to seeing eight-year-old Gretchen walking on the morning of her disappearance in 1975. He said he offered her a ride in his green station wagon and took her to a nearby wooded area. He said he parked the car and asked her to remove her clothes. When she refused, he struck her in the head, killing her and then attempted to cover up her body and fled the scene. Her remains were discovered two months later.
