Though I will admit that your answer is better, you were still wrong, my friend. And yes, the answer is footsteps.

See, that was my first thought when I was thinking about this, but it's not a very good answer. That's why I abandoned it in favor of stairs, because you take footsteps, but you leave footprints. So, I don't know, that's not a great, uh, answer to the riddle, in my opinion.
