I'm a slave to the siren aka Starbucks barista. I'm pretty decent with customers and I'm pretty good at having conversations with people and generally sensing when someone just wants to blind and move forward. Anyways I was on a register the other day taking people's orders these two older men come up start taking their order one of them says to me I'd like a coffee black so I want to clarify and ask him the size and the roast, blonde, medium or dark. He looks at his friend and rudely says I'm not gonna repeat verbatim what he said it's in Dutch and essentially translates directly to wow this isn't the smartest fella on the block here eh? They could sure use some brains back here. Then he told me he wanted a medium dark roast so I nodded and then I replied to him in Dutch asking him the regular questions would you like anything else to eat drink what was your name again for your drinks do you have a Starbucks rewards card I was perfectly pleasant smiled for the rest of the transaction but just conducted it in Dutch. He answered all the questions in English with his eyes bulging out of his head his friend looked at kind of worried but burst out laughing as soon as they walked away. I realized it might not have been the most the best look for someone in the service industry and my co-worker asked me what happened when I told her she actually thought I was in the house maybe maybe she backed off I don't think so I was polite I just I speak Dutch. Am I the asshole?
As a barista veteran and customer service, I would say you're not the asshole for doing that, but I would definitely say that just brushing it off and continuing to ask your question in English would be better.
