So, my son has autism, level one, previously called Asperger's. And due to that, he also has a psychiatrist, multiple psychologists and doctors, and we decided to get a new primary care doctor who works closely with his other providers to better coordinate his care. I brought my son in for the standard well child visit and spent nearly an hour with this new doctor going over his issues, medications, history, etc. Toward the end of the visit, she says to me, well, he can get the Gardasil vaccine today, to which I reply, oh no, he can't have that, I don't want him to get autism. So I should maybe note here too that I'm also a bit on the spectrum, I have Asperger's, and while I think my sarcasm is on point, I must have been a little too serious looking because she just stared at me. The silent lasted an eternity, and while I imagined she was deciding how to proceed, I laughed and tried to assure her I was only kidding, but she returned a nervous sounding chuckle and ended up just leaving the room. As my son and I were discussing whether I was offensive, for the record, he thought I was hilarious. In walked the nurse with a stack of information about vaccines. He started his lecture about vaccine safety and potential risks, etc. and no amount of my insurances that we are not in fact anti-vax would stop him. He just kept saying, okay, well, I have to tell you this, in a way that suggested that the doctor told him to give me the full spiel.
I mean you gotta do what you feel is best for your child. I mean personally, I vaccinated my kids because you know you're taught that it's the right thing to do.
But you know, I mean at the same time they say that it's best to get your dogs off fixed and everything and I chose not to put her, my dog, under the knife and do it that way.
Yeah I don't think you did anything wrong but just know that kidding around with the new doctor is not exactly the best idea because they don't know if you're kidding or not and they have liability issues
And what I mean by that is it's so easy to sue hospitals and the court system will side with the patients, especially in cases like this where something was said first.
So they're going to cover their bases no matter how much you assure them because they just want to make sure that they were honest and truthful up front with you to cover their ass pretty much.
So yeah, please don't take it personally. It's just they are trying to make sure that they don't get sued for anything that was mishandled in their offices.
With your son having Asperger's and all, I would say, no, you didn't do anything wrong and get your son into finance or chess or something intelligent because people with Asperger's have done amazing things. And yeah.
