How do you guys feel about participation awards personally I feel like for kids it's a bunch of bullshit but I said adults we don't talk about the fact that the way people are getting paid as a participation award in itself because people get paid thousands of dollars for being mediocre OK how do you guys feel about that are you one of those people who knows you're not that good at your job and you get paid like as if you were an expert And if you're not and you're just on the outside looking in like me how do you feel about the generations to come do you think like this is going to help the self-esteem and boost overall morale or is it gonna hinder the future generations to come

Girl, this is a good question. It's definitely gonna hinder because, okay, even as a child, if everyone's getting applauded for something that they're barely making effort to do, no one's gonna want to do anything. Everything stays at a standstill and no one wants to reach out. There's very few who will reach out and do better.

As far as bringing that into the adult world I don't know how that's gonna work because there's Apple jobs who pay based on commission like for example a waitress waitressing those who did really good get rewarded that rewarded for that and they saw that pretty quickly

Those jobs that everybody gets paid pretty much the same for doing the same amount of work are yeah, I mean they're not going to get promoted they're just going to stay at a standstill so I mean, I don't know. I don't know how that works.

On another point, I'm trying to think of jobs that people would actually want to do and that aren't in direct competition that would want to stay in the same lane as everybody else, getting paid the same. I mean, yeah, they might get good money, but it's not like, you know, they're gonna be loving their job, you know?

Commission based jobs was a really good example. I work in the insurance industry and I see how like customer service people, I really don't feel like they bring as much value to the business as myself as a salesperson does. Like, yeah, they help retain, but they're not really motivated.

But then we think about people who are like really mediocre like think about the times you've got to go get your nails done and The bitch does not know what she's doing, but she's trying to charge you a hundred and fifty dollars for some basic ass shit And it's like people...

My point being, like, there's people who suck at their job and are finding the customers that are willing to pay them more than what they're worth, even though they're mediocre as fuck. And it's just like, am I mad that...

I don't think of that as a participation award so much as poor management and resource allocation. you should not be getting paid to do nothing.

Also, we are way too fixated on self-esteem. This has been researched to death. The best place to find people with the highest self-esteem and self-confidence is prison.

In fact, this participation trophy mentality came from this fixation on self-esteem.

Nobody said anything about being paid for doing nothing. It's just like people aren't that good at their jobs. Like there's literal research that shows that knowing the right people will get you a lot farther than how smart you are or how well you do your job.

I don't know can you give me another example because like I I feel like I understand what you're trying to say but the prison system is just too corrupted and fucked up for us to use it as a good control for any research project don't you think

I agree that the participation mentality probably stems from that, but my whole thing is is like Like, do you work with it or do you work against it? like what do you personally do?

I call it getting paid to do nothing. As a business owner, I can't afford to think of it any other way. I'm paying you to do a specific thing, and if you're not doing it right, The money I'm giving you is going to waste and you got to go.

What you're talking about is mid-level management and above. Yes, it's a meritocracy on the bottom, but with promotions, eventually it gets to a point where you're all on the same level. You're all better than the rest, and you are not going to get that promotion to upper management by by being 5% better.

But even on the bottom, it's always been about who you know. Something like 80 to 90 percent of available jobs are not listed anywhere outside of the company. So to get them, you would have to know somebody in the company or be in the company.

No, because it's got nothing to do with the system. The measures for self-esteem are the same whether you're in prison or not. And we see this consistently. People in prison have self-esteem and self-confidence that's way above everyone else.

As somebody who has worked in a child care setting, it is definitely way better to let everybody get the same thing than just one person getting an award. It's better for everybody. I think it's a flip. For kids, they should. adults it doesn't matter.

Getting an award for participation is like getting paid for walking through a door.

When the kids are young, like kindergarten, Asian stuff, it's fine, like it does, it's fine, but as they get older, I'd have to say, Like eighth grade on, I'm a little, about it.

Am I mad that there's people out there that suck at their job and get paid more than I do? Yes, absolutely. But it's like, how the fuck do I do that? Like, how the fuck do I get paid while I'm not good at something, like as if I'm already an expert? You know, like...
