When you debate or have a discussion, what is your intent? Do you leave an open mind? Do you allow for people to change your mind?

But I would say that overall being open-minded like about the topic in general will be I feel like beneficial towards both or all parties because you know if you're close-minded then it kind of feels like an argument or like you know you're trying to be the winner.

Instead of being the winner, you should be wanting to inform or be informed. Because I feel like you can always learn something new at every corner. Knowledge is always power. So if you learn something new, then you should take that and move along a new perspective so it's worth it.

It's worth being able to come together just to express yourself and just to hear one another.

Shoot, my only intent is to learn something I didn't know. I mean, if I was right about something, that's cool. But if I was wrong and there's some other things, hey, more power to me, right?

My intent is to exchange information with others and to be better.

Definitely to learn. It doesn't matter if you win an argument or a debate. It's all about learning from each other and respecting each other's opinion.

If you have a position that ends up needing revision, then you win in the sense that you have a more defensible position. So that's kind of just an added benefit for yourself.

For knowledge, to teach, to listen. More so to listen to someone else's viewpoint.

Whether it's a debate or discussion, I'm looking for my perspective to widen. I want to know why you think the way you think versus why I think the way I think and how I feel. And hopefully the outcome is just understanding.

So I would never hold the truth back from somebody just because it would make them feel comfortable. But if you don't listen to them, they're not going to respect you enough to listen to you. So there's no point if you're not doing all three of these at the same time.
